Parent's Guide to the CBC Curriculum in Kenya

Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) reshapes how children learn — focusing on skills, values and real-world competence. Here's what every parent at Sacred Heart should know.

Why CBC?

CBC was introduced to move learning beyond exam scores. It develops seven core competencies — communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, citizenship, digital literacy and learning to learn — alongside national values rooted in our Kenyan identity.

The CBC Levels at Sacred Heart

Ages 4 – 5

Play-based learning that introduces language, numbers, psychomotor and creative activities. Children learn through songs, stories and structured play.

Ages 6 – 8

Foundations in literacy, numeracy, environmental activities, hygiene and nutrition, religious education, movement and creative arts.

Upper Primary (Grade 4 – 6)

Ages 9 – 11

Pupils deepen English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Science & Technology, Social Studies, Agriculture, Home Science, Religious Education and Creative Arts.

Junior School (Grade 7 – 9)

A broad common curriculum prepares learners for senior school pathways — STEM, Arts & Sports Science, and Social Sciences.

We follow the full CBC framework, enriched with Catholic Religious Education, sports, music, drama and life-skills formation rooted in our motto, 'Together We Excel Differently.'
